What is Gotu Kola?

Gotu kola is a perennial herb that blooms and bears fruit in summer. Gotu kola, or the second name for Centella asiatica, is found in Asia, Africa and Madagascar. Most often it lives along the banks of small rivers. The whole plant is used. It is used to make infusions, decoctions, extracts, and juice and powder from dried gotu kola leaves are also used. As a medicine, gotu kola has been used for a long time and is included in the pharmacopoeia of Great Britain and India.

Gota Kola composition

The active components of the plant determine the medicinal properties of gotu kola. Centella contains: vitamins, tannins, triterpene saponins (in particular asiaticoside), barrigenol, volatile oils, bioflavonoids, asparagine, phosphorus, calcium, thymine, isoginetin, potassium flavonoids (such as rutin, kaempferol, quarcetin).

Precautionary measures

  • Harmful to the liver . It is not recommended to use for longer than 6 weeks without a doctor's prescription. Or take a 2-week break before resuming use.
  • Diabetes . Gotu Kola increases blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is not recommended for use by diabetics.
  • Diuretics . This plant acts as a diuretic. Concomitant use may cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Sedatives . Gotu Kola has anti-anxiety properties and can enhance the effects of anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs.
  • Asiaticoside, one of the components of Gotu Kola, has been linked to tumor growth in mice during research. Therefore, if there is a family history of skin cancer, it is recommended to refrain from taking this supplement.

Gotu Kola properties

The benefits of gotu kola are obvious and regular consumption of a quality product will ensure the desired result. Gotu Kola for varicose veins

    Gotu kola improves venous outflow and vein tone. Gotu kola is responsible for the venous system and is effective for varicose veins (varicose veins, hemorrhoids). The therapeutic effect is achieved due to the beneficial effects on the circulatory system and the veins and capillaries themselves.

    What other medicinal properties does gotu kola have?

    One cannot miss such an important property of gotu kola as normalizing blood pressure.
    Positive improvements from taking gotu kola are observed in disorders of the nervous system, menopause, epilepsy, hypotension, and atherosclerosis. At the same time, gotu kola improves digestion and helps treat stomach and small intestinal ulcers. Patients suffering from glaucoma, myopia, as well as people with neuropsychiatric disorders, insomnia, improved their conditions by using gotu kola.

    Beneficial features

    Improves cognitive function

    A study was conducted in Indonesia on people with post-stroke cognitive impairment. The patients were divided into 3 groups. Each group received a specific amount and type of medication:

    • Number of patients: 48.
    • 17 people - 1000 mg/day Gotu Kola extract.
    • 17 – 750 mg/day Gotu Kola extract.
    • 14 - 3 mg/day folic acid.
    • The study period was 6 weeks.

    The study found that both Gotu Kola and folic acid had the same positive effect on post-stroke cognitive impairment.

    A stroke can lead to cognitive decline. The incidence of cognitive impairment after ischemic stroke is 20 to 30%, with an increased risk of manifestation after two years. 25% of stroke patients suffer from dementia.

    Neuroprotectants, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medications are commonly used to reduce cognitive effects and restore mental function. The disadvantages of this therapy are its high cost and side effects. Therefore, natural medicines are now increasingly used, especially in herbal form, rather than as an active ingredient (isolating a pure compound).

    One such medicinal herb is Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica). It contains triterpenes (asiaticoside, madecassoside) - these compounds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. Apoptosis is the programmed death of cells and neurons. This explains the positive effect of Gotu Kola on brain plasticity, protecting neurons from death and increasing the length of dendrites (the processes of neurons that receive information).

    For healthy people, Gotu Kola also has a positive effect on cognitive function. Triterpenes increase blood flow throughout the body. Increased blood flow leads to better oxygen and glucose saturation of both muscles and brain. And antioxidant effects reduce the effects of oxidative stress in the brain by stimulating neural pathways. [1]

    Helps with Alzheimer's disease

    Alzheimer's disease is an age-related, irreversible and progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes cognitive deficits, personality changes and memory impairment. There is no cure for this disease. And treatment either delays the onset or slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

    The early stage of the disease is characterized by loss of short-term memory, forgetting names and losing things. Then irritability and mood swings appear. In severe cases, patients suffer from urinary incontinence, complete loss of memory and sense of time. Patients become completely dependent on other people.

    Over the past few years, research has been conducted on the use of various Ayurvedic herbs for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Gotu Kola is one of these herbs. Its components - triterpenes (asiaticoside) - reduce cell death induced by oxygen peroxide, reduce the concentration of free radicals and suppress the death of beta-amyloid cells. This effect slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease and reduces the manifestation of behavioral abnormalities. [2]

    Reduces stress and helps with depression

    Anxiety and stress are a normal part of everyone's life. In the short term, stress increases breathing and heart rate, concentrating blood flow to the brain. Severe anxiety causes dizziness and nausea. Chronic stress negatively affects the entire body: constant headaches, mood swings, depression, problems with the cardiovascular system, decreased libido, etc.

    In the short term, the feeling of stress and anxiety is associated with the release of hormones and neurotransmitters: cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine, glutamate, etc. This release of chemicals activates the body, directing all its efforts to solve the problem.

    In the long term, constant activation of the body and excessive release of hormones and neurotransmitters leads to damage to nerve cells and neurons. A large number of free radicals are released. All of this leads to oxidative stress and brain damage.

    Gotu Kola reduces cortisol (stress hormone) levels and increases dopamine and serotonin levels. The last two are neurotransmitters that are responsible for mood and motivation. This effect on the chemical activity of the brain leads to a decrease in the frequency of stress attacks and improves the overall emotional state. [3]

    Heals wounds

    Gotu Kola contains two specific chemicals - triterpenoids and saponins, which improve the appearance of the skin and heal wounds. This occurs due to an increase in cellular proliferation (increase in the number of cells) and collagen synthesis in the wound area.

    Saponins improve the appearance of the skin by reducing the formation of scars, wrinkles and other blemishes. They are also quite often used to prevent scars after surgery and reduce stretch marks.

    Triterpenes stimulate the healing process, allowing wounds to heal faster. They strengthen the skin, increase the amount of antioxidants in the body and increase blood flow throughout the body. [4]

    Other useful properties

    Enhances the growth of new brain cells . Gotu Kola causes the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that plays a fundamental role in neurogenesis. Specifically, BDNF promotes the creation of new brain cells and the health of existing ones by increasing brain plasticity, improving communication between brain cells and dendritic branching.

    Has an antioxidant effect on the brain . Every day, brain cells are exposed to numerous neurotoxins such as lead, arsenic, aluminum and MSG, which can cause migraines, brain fog and mood swings. Gotu Kola has antioxidant effects and is used to minimize the effects of free radicals. Its antioxidants neutralize free radical damage, preventing damage to brain cells.

    Increases the effectiveness of vitamin E. Vitamin E is one of the most important vitamins for heart health, but it is also important for brain function. When combined with vitamin C, vitamin E has been shown to prevent age-related cognitive decline. It also improves cognitive function, minimizes memory loss, and reduces the risk of developing diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

    Sedative and anxiolytic properties . Calming effects are achieved due to the brachmoside and braminoside components. They calm the central nervous system and have a sedative and tranquilizing effect.

    Antiepileptic properties . Gotu Kola increases GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) levels. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter that calms the body and has an anticonvulsant effect. This plant also showed a decrease in the formation of lipid peroxidation products, a decrease in spontaneous motor activity and potentiation of hyperactivity caused by diazepam withdrawal.

    Gotu Kola opinions

    Theoretically, gotu kola is more suitable for hypotensive patients, but it also normalizes blood pressure and improves the condition of hypertensive patients. Therefore, it is impossible to say unequivocally that Gotu Kola is contraindicated for someone.

    Side effects and interactions

    It is extremely safe, having been consumed as food and drunk as tea by millions of people for thousands of years. Most side effects are very minor. This is usually an upset stomach or headache.

    However, there are a few precautions. It should not be mixed with central nervous system (CNS) antidepressants.

    Gotu kola should be used with caution by anyone who has had liver problems or skin cancer. Gotu Kola supplements should not be given to children or pregnant or lactating women. Since there is little reliable information about safety in these specific situations.

    Anti-inflammatory properties

    Gotu kola has anti-inflammatory properties, it enhances the secretion of the anti-inflammatory factor IL-1β, inhibits cyclooxygenase and prevents excessive activation of NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa-bi, which controls inflammation and the immune response; dysregulation of this factor causes inflammation and autoimmune diseases). Gotu kola is able to protect the stomach, prevents ulcer formation caused by alcohol intake up to 58-82%, and also promotes the healing of ulcers. Traditionally in Chinese medicine, gotu kola is used to stimulate urination and can also protect the kidneys from toxic damage. Also, gotu kola extract can reduce the toxic effect of heavy metals on the testes and normalize their functions.

    Improving memory and attention

    Improvements in memory and attention caused by the use of gotu kola are also associated with increased levels of neurotrophic factors and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases. A study in healthy elderly patients who took 250-750mg of gotu kola extract for two months found improved short-term memory for numbers, improved spatial memory and decreased choice time. A study was conducted on gotu kola in combination with other herbal remedies for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (white peony, ashwagandha, spirulina, bacoma manje, lemon balm, gotu kola), which showed very effective results, but from this study it cannot be concluded that which herbal remedy made the greatest contribution to improving concentration.

    Pharmacology

    The components that make up Gotu Kola stimulate microcirculation of the blood flow. Thanks to this, blood well supplies various organs, including the heart muscle and the brain. This is why grass is often called “brain food.” It is noted that it stimulates memory, attention, increases concentration, and helps cope with stress.

    The herb acts as a sedative and is used to eliminate inflammatory processes and treat infections, including ARVI. Can be used to treat liver pathologies.

    In folk medicine of African countries and Sri Lanka, it is used to treat skin pathologies, including leprosy. It is also used to treat the following diseases:

    • tuberculosis;
    • arthritis;
    • haemorrhoids;
    • mental disorders.

    Thanks to its rich antioxidant composition, Gotu Kola has a healing effect on various organ systems:

    • prevention of premature aging of brain tissue;
    • protecting cells from destruction by free radicals;
    • increasing learning ability;
    • increased sharpness of thinking;
    • stimulation of digestion;
    • healing of ulcerative formations of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • diuretic effect;
    • removal of puffiness;
    • reducing the feeling of fatigue;
    • normalization of mood;
    • maintaining acid-base balance;
    • increased adaptability to stress (adaptogenic effect);
    • promoting recovery from injury;
    • stimulation of collagen synthesis.

    Improved skin condition

    Separately, it is worth noting the effect of gotu kola extract on the skin and connective tissue. Asiaticoside (a component of gotu kola extract) activates genes associated with skin cell growth and collagen synthesis, promotes fibroblast migration and skin growth. Asiaticoside promotes wound healing without the formation of scars, which is associated with downregulation of transforming growth factor beta receptors, the increased activity of which is associated with the formation of scar tissue. In addition to its effect on genes associated with the activation of collagen synthesis, gotu kola extract helps reduce the activity of enzymes that destroy collagen, bidirectionally acting on improving the quality of connective tissue, improving skin condition and wound healing. Gotu kola extract is an extremely versatile remedy that effectively improves brain function, memory, attention and the ability to learn new skills due to a strong increase in neurotrophic factors and the growth of dendrites and axons, protects neurons, helps relieve anxiety and depressive symptoms, especially those associated with stress, and has many more positive effects on the human body.

    Improving the functioning of the cardiovascular system

    In addition to the extremely positive effect of gotu kola on the nervous system and memory, the extract of this plant has many other benefits. Gotu kola is able to protect cardiac tissue during ischemia, reduce platelet activity and reduce the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes, can protect the vascular endothelium, improve blood circulation, especially microcirculation, especially in diabetic patients. Gotu kola is extremely effective for chronic venous insufficiency, inhibiting elastase and collagenase, promoting the normalization of vein walls.
