Of all the variety of food products, Omega-3 acids are contained in sufficient quantities for the body only in the tissues of cold-water fish (tuna, sardines, salmon, mackerel, mackerel). Long-term use of omega-3 fatty acids increases the risk of atrial fibrillation
An analysis of publications and controlled randomized trials showed that long-term use of supplements that contain marine omega-3 fatty acids increases the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. However, an increased risk was recorded when taking more than 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids per day.
Materials and methods. An international team of scientists searched the MEDLINE and Embase databases and identified articles and abstracts published from early 2012 to late 2021 that examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, data from randomized controlled trials were analyzed. At the same time, only studies with 500 participants or more and a follow-up duration of at least a year were taken into account, in which atrial fibrillation while taking omega-3 fatty acids was considered as a preliminary clinical outcome, adverse effect, or reason for hospitalization. The hazard ratio for atrial fibrillation in each study was analyzed using a random effects model, and a dose-response relationship was determined using a meta-regression model.
Results. A total of 4049 records and 7 studies involving 81,210 patients were analyzed. The effects of supplements that contained one gram or less of marine omega-3 fatty acids were studied in 58,939 people (72.6%). 22,271 patients (27.4%) were enrolled in supplement studies that contained more than one gram of omega-3 fatty acids. The average age of participants was 65 years, 39% of patients were women. The weighted average follow-up period was 4.9 years. A meta-analysis found an increased risk of atrial fibrillation with marine omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. In a dose-stratified analysis, the hazard ratio was higher in studies where participants took more than 1 g of omega-3 fatty acids per day compared with those who took 1 g or less per day. In a meta-regression model, the hazard ratio for atrial fibrillation increased with higher doses of omega-3 fatty acids per gram.
Conclusions. A study of randomized controlled trials found that consumption of marine omega-3 fatty acids increased the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. The risk becomes higher if you consume more than 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids per day.
