Pertussin: for which cough should you buy it?

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Oral solution and syrup Pertussin, (or solution and syrup Pertussin Ch) is a combined medicinal product with active ingredients of plant origin, due to which its main expectorant effect is manifested.

According to Wikipedia, the herb thyme ( thyme ) for a dry cough that is not accompanied by sputum, increases the volume of secretion secreted by the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, promotes its dilution and speedy evacuation. In addition to this, potassium bromide , acting on the central nervous system, reduces its excitability.

Composition, dosage form

A medication that relieves the respiratory system from the consequences of the inflammatory process is available in a single form. This is a syrupy solution for oral administration: a homogeneous liquid of dark brown color, sweet, with a light herbal aroma and a characteristic specific taste. The syrup is packaged in glass bottles with a volume of 50 to 125 ml and has secondary packaging - cardboard boxes, which contain detailed instructions for its use.

The drug contains 2 active compounds:

  • creeping thyme herb extract (thyme): a plant that has an anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect; 100 ml of solution contains 12 g of the drug;
  • potassium bromide: has a calming effect, reduces the excitability of the central nervous system centers responsible for cough reflexes; 10 ml of syrup contains 0.1 g of bromide.

The basis of the medicinal liquid is distilled water. Ethyl alcohol in microdoses (80 or 96%) and sugar syrup were added to the medicine as auxiliary and preservative components.

In addition to the drug called Pertussin, there is a variant on sale called Pertussin Ch, the composition and purpose of which is completely identical to the original. The difference may be in some stages of production.

Contraindications

Conditions in which the use of this drug is contraindicated include:

  • personal hypersensitivity ;
  • liver pathology;
  • pregnancy;
  • alcoholism;
  • lactation;
  • traumatic brain injuries / disorders ;
  • age up to 3 years;
  • brain pathologies;
  • decompensated CHF;
  • epilepsy;
  • sugar intolerance.

The following should be used with caution:

  • children over 3 years old (due to the presence of ethanol );
  • patients with diabetes mellitus .

Instructions for use of Pertussin (Method and dosage)

Pertussin solution and syrup, the instructions for use of which are identical to the instructions for Pertussin Ch, are intended for oral administration after meals (this method of administration is preferable due to the possible effect of the drug ingredients on reducing appetite ).

Patients of any age category (starting from 3 years) are prescribed a solution and cough syrup three times every 24 hours. Adult patients are advised to take 15 ml of the drug (a tablespoon) three times a day; children, in accordance with their age, weight and height, are prescribed from 2.5 ml to 10 ml of the medicinal product (from ½ to 2 teaspoons).

Depending on the type of cough for which the course of treatment is prescribed (taking into account the degree of liquefaction and sputum discharge ), the drug can be continued for 10-14 days. The possibility of further therapy, or the addition of other mucolytic drugs (tablets, syrups, powders), is individually determined by the attending physician.

Indications for use

The drug is prescribed in the complex treatment of colds and other diseases that are accompanied by cough:

  • with tracheitis;
  • acute and chronic bronchitis during periods of exacerbation;
  • for acute respiratory viral infections;
  • with pneumonia;
  • whooping cough

Pertussin is indicated for use from the age of 3 years. But in some cases, pediatricians recommend using it for younger patients: 2.5 or 2 years, if there are no contraindications. It is noted that the syrup helps get rid of cough at any stage of the inflammatory process. However, taking it at the initial signs significantly reduces the recovery time.

If necessary, Pertussin is allowed to be combined with other mucolytic and antibacterial drugs taken orally.

special instructions

of sugar syrup in the drug , which is important for patients with any sugar intolerance and patients with diabetes .

Due to the content of ethyl alcohol , its intake (especially in large quantities) can affect the adequacy of the patient’s behavior while performing precise/dangerous work or driving vehicles.

Pertussin for children

The official instructions for children allow the drug to be taken only when the patient reaches 3 years of age, but in practice there are cases of this medicine being used by younger children.

At what age can Pertussin be given, for what cough should it be prescribed and how to take it to children should be determined by a pediatrician individually in each individual case, taking into account the weight and height of the child. This is confirmed by reviews of syrup for children, which, in the case of uncomplicated respiratory diseases , often independently copes with the appearance of a dry cough ( thinning and discharge of sputum ) and does not require the addition of other similar drugs to the treatment.

Reviews about Pertussin

In the vast majority of cases, reviews of Pertussin syrup, as well as the solution of this remedy, are positive. For many patients, both adults and children, this drug really helped get rid of the symptoms of dry cough without causing any adverse reactions or negative effects, and without significantly affecting the family budget. However, the choice of medication, even for the treatment of a “banal” cough, should remain the prerogative of the attending physician, who is obliged to establish the correct diagnosis for the patient and prescribe effective therapy.

Mechanism of action of the drug

The combination of medicinal herb extract and potassium bromide has a complex effect:

  • soothes excessively strong coughing attacks;
  • promotes the transition of a dry non-productive cough to a wet one, increasing the volume of sputum and facilitating its removal from the respiratory tract;
  • reduces irritation of the functional epithelium by clots of mucous secretion;
  • helps reduce the inflammatory process;
  • facilitates and restores breathing during acute respiratory infections.

Pertussin activates circulation in tissues, reduces symptoms of bronchial inflammation and accelerates recovery in children and adults with mild and moderate forms of colds, although it does not affect the pathological process itself. Natural components ensure rapid action of the drug: 15–20 minutes after consuming the dose. The liquid is actively absorbed from the stomach cavity into the bloodstream, reducing symptoms within 2–4 hours. The therapeutic effect - an increase in sputum volume and cough productivity increases as treatment continues.

Pertussin price, where to buy

Depending on the manufacturer, the price of Pertussin syrup, as well as a solution of this drug, fluctuates around 20-40 rubles per 100 gram bottle.

Pertussin

Pertussin (creeping thyme herb extract + potassium bromide) is a herbal remedy used to relieve cough in inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract. The mechanism of antitussive action can be based on two physiological patterns: facilitating the evacuation of sputum from the respiratory tract and/or a direct effect on the cough center in the brain. Pertussin is a drug of combined action that improves the evacuation of mucus from the respiratory tract and suppresses the excitability of the cough center. The drug appeared on the Russian pharmaceutical market in the late 60s of the last century. In addition to the herbal component (creeping thyme herb extract), it also contains the chemical substance potassium bromide, whose function is to gently suppress the excitability of the cough center. Potassium bromide has long been used as a sedative and anticonvulsant. The dosage form of the drug is syrup (Pertussin should not be confused with Pectusin tablets - these are different medicines). Pertussin is effective for tracheitis, bronchitis, and whooping cough. Tracheitis and bronchitis usually occur with a productive cough, so in this case the expectorant effect of the drug would be appropriate. Whooping cough is characterized by attacks of spasmodic cough, in which the property of potassium bromide to suppress the cough reflex is in demand, thereby minimizing the risk of injury to the mucous membranes. For dry cough, the drug is not used. For productive cough, Pertussin is recommended to be used as an adjuvant as part of complex pharmacotherapy.

It is undesirable to base the entire treatment process on Pertussin alone (i.e., monotherapy). In this regard, depending on the clinical situation, the use of antibiotics, antiviral agents, immunostimulants, painkillers, vitamin-mineral complexes, etc. is indicated. Pertussin is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to one of the active or auxiliary components of the drug, liver failure, epilepsy, head injury, impaired absorption of sugars, pregnancy, and during breastfeeding. In pediatric practice, the drug is used in patients after they reach the age of three. Pertussin contains ethyl alcohol as one of the excipients, so the drug should be used in children (as well as in persons whose activities require increased attention and reaction speed) with extreme caution. The same applies to people suffering from diabetes, because... Pertussin contains sugar. It is recommended to take the drug after meals, because... it suppresses appetite. The duration of the medication course is from 10 to 14 days. A repeated course is allowed only with the agreement of a doctor. Pertussin is not recommended to be combined with centrally acting antitussive drugs, because the latter may complicate the evacuation of sputum from the upper respiratory tract.
