Sulfacyl sodium (Albucid) eye drops 20% fl. 10ml

Eye infections are very common among people of all ages and professions.

They occur with bacterial, viral, fungal damage to the mucous membrane, and a decrease in protective immune forces.

In this condition, doctors give preference to local antibiotic therapy.

Antibiotics in the form of eye drops are a convenient form for use with minimal side effects. The drug is almost not absorbed from the surface of the cornea, but accumulates in the superficial tissues of the eye. An antimicrobial solution inhibits bacterial activity and reduces infectious inflammation.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

The Pharmacopoeia indicates that the formula of Sodium Sulfacyl is CsHgSaNaOsS-b^O. INNSulfacetamide . The recipe in Latin will contain the name Sulfacylum-natrium.

Eye drops inhibit the absorption of PABA and also prevent the synthesis of PABA-containing growth factors of microorganisms.

The medicine is characterized by antibacterial properties. It acts on streptococci , gonococci , E. coli , chlamydia , pneumococci , actinomycetes .

An aqueous solution of Sodium Sulfacyl has a slightly alkaline reaction, which allows it to be instilled into the conjunctival sac of the eye.

Indications for use

Eye drops are used for gonorrheal eye diseases, conjunctivitis , blenorrhea , purulent corneal ulcers, blepharitis and other eye diseases. The drug can be used by both children and adults, including for the prevention of blenorrhea in infants. In the case of purulent processes, it stops them and accelerates the healing of the cornea.

Prescribed for the treatment of streptoderma and staphyloderma , infections caused by Escherichia coli .

The medicine can be used orally in the case of colibacillary urinary tract infections, mastoiditis , puerperal sepsis and other infectious diseases .

Infectious conjunctivitis

Statistically the leading variant of inflammation of the conjunctiva. Depending on the pathogen, it is divided into subgroups: viral, bacterial, fungal. Moreover, the incidence in children is distributed among these subgroups with approximately equal frequency, while in adults predominantly viral forms are found (over 80%). In the overall structure of morbidity, the proportion of fungal conjunctivitis (ophthalmomycosis) is increasing, which is explained, first of all, by the catastrophically irresponsible and uncontrolled use of antibiotics by the population (when the bacterial flora is suppressed, fungal cultures, including pathogenic ones, are activated).

Drugs for the treatment of viral conjunctivitis

With viral conjunctivitis (it can be caused by influenza viruses, herpes, etc.; in total there are about 40 species dangerous to humans), the main therapeutic goal is to stimulate and intensify the immune response. For this purpose the following are appointed:

  • eye drops based on human interferon (Ophthalmoferon, Interferon, etc.);
  • drugs that stimulate the production of endogenous, own interferon (Poludan, Tsitovir, Cycloferon);
  • eye ointments (Bonafton, Acyclovir, Florenal, etc.);
  • according to indications - vasoconstrictor and/or moisturizing drugs (“artificial tears”), similar to Vizin, Oksial, etc.

Drops and ointments for bacterial (purulent) form

For bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotics are prescribed:

  • drops (Albucid, Levomitin, Tsipromed, etc.);
  • eye ointments (tetracycline, erythromycin, gentamicin, ofloxacin);
  • tablet drugs (Doxycycline, Sumamed, Vilprafen, etc.; for chlamydia, Levofloxacin, Lomefloxacin).

Only a specialist can prescribe medications (and their dosage, frequency and duration of use) and evaluate the effectiveness of their use! By contacting our ophthalmology center, you can be sure of an individual approach and high results in the treatment of eye diseases in children and adults.

Treatment of fungal infections (mycoses)

For fungal conjunctivitis (ophthalmomycosis), treatment, as a rule, lasts much longer than for other infectious conjunctivitis, and includes specific antimycotic agents, and antifungal eye drops are practically not produced on an industrial scale in the world - they are prepared extemporaneously (as needed): Fluconazole , Amphotericin et al.

Some cases require additional intake of tablet forms of the antimycotic, as well as the simultaneous use of anti-inflammatory, antihistamine (antiallergic) and antibacterial drops and ointments.

Instructions for use of Sulfacyl Sodium (Method and dosage)

For those who are indicated for Sulfacyl Sodium eye drops, the instructions for use indicate that instillations should be carried out into the conjunctival sac . For adult patients, a dosage of 1-2 drops is prescribed. The product is applied 5-6 times a day (every 4-8 hours). In childhood, a solution of 10 percent and 20 percent is indicated. To prevent the development of blenorrhea, immediately after birth, infants are instilled with 2 drops of the product, and then 2 drops every 2 hours.

The medicine can also be used in ointments based on petroleum jelly 10-30% in the case of blepharitis and eczema of the eyelid skin.

Instructions for use of Sulfacyl Sodium indicate that the duration of therapy directly depends on the severity of the disease. It is not recommended to use the medicine for longer without consulting a specialist.

In the case of gonorrheal eye diseases, combination therapy . Instill a 30% solution or dust the affected area with powder; in addition, take the drug by mouth.

Infected wounds are treated using the powder.

The maximum single dosage for adults orally is 2 g, the maximum daily dosage is 7 g.

Before using the drops for the first time, the cap is screwed all the way down. A spike on the inside pierces a hole in the membrane. The cap is unscrewed and after light pressure on the body of the bottle, the solution is dripped into the eyes. Then the bottle should be closed again.

Detailed analysis of drugs

Sulfacyl sodium and Albucid are two identical drugs. The first name is newer, it is this drug that can be found in pharmacies most often. Let us consider in more detail the composition and scope of their application.

Indications for use

Both drugs are used for infection of the eye tissues with bacteria and the occurrence of reactive inflammation.

It manifests itself in the following forms of diseases:

  • keratitis – inflammation of the cornea;
  • conjunctivitis – inflammatory changes in the epithelium of the conjunctiva;
  • blepharitis - infection of the upper and lower eyelids and surrounding tissues;
  • blenorrhea - a specific gonococcal lesion of the eye;

Medicines are active against staphylococci, streptococci, enterobacteria, Proteus, Escherichia coli and many other pathogenic bacteria.

Price

On average, the price of Albucid with a concentration of 20% and 30% is 60-80 rubles. Sulfacyl sodium has the same dosages of sulfacetamide, a similar bottle volume - 10 ml. The price per bottle is also 60-80 rubles.

Compound

The components of these two drugs are identical.

SubstanceConcentration in 1 ml of drug
Sulfacetamide (sulfacetyl) sodium200 mg at 20% concentration
300 mg at 30% concentration
Sodium thiosulfate1.0 mg
Hydrochloric acidUp to pH 7.5-8.5
Water for injectionUp to 1 ml volume

Instructions for use

These two drugs are used with the same frequency - up to 6 times a day, 1-2 drops are instilled. The duration of the course of local antibiotic is 7-10 days. The course of treatment can be extended according to indications.

Before opening the bottle, you must sanitize your hands. Before the procedure, purulent deposits are removed with a cotton ball moistened with warm saline, furatsilin solution or water.

To instill, you need to pull down the lower eyelid and slightly tilt your head back. A drop of the drug is placed into the space between the lower eyelid and the cornea of the eye. It is important to try not to touch the eyelashes, eyelids and surrounding tissues with the tip of the bottle.

For children

Childhood and adolescence are not a contraindication to the use of Sulfacyl sodium and Albucid. The dosage for young children can be reduced to one drop strictly as directed by the doctor. Children over 10 years of age are allowed to use the adult dosage - 2 drops into the infected eye.

The drugs are used in maternity hospitals to prevent gonoblennorrhea in newborns.

special instructions

You should not wear contact lenses while you are being treated for an eye infection. Particular attention should be paid when prescribing these two drugs to people with hypersensitivity to certain drugs. These include diuretics – furosemide, dichlorothiazide. As well as carbonic anhydrase, sulfonylurea and its derivatives. If you are allergic to any of these substances, a cross-reaction to sodium sulfacetamide is expected.

Interaction with other drugs

There is practically no absorption from the surface of the cornea. Local drug incompatibility is observed with drugs containing silver ions. These include antiseptics - collargol and protargol. When instilled simultaneously, a sedimentary complex of small crystals may form on the surface of the cornea, damaging the eye tissue.

Pregnancy and lactation

During pregnancy, the use of Albucid and Sulfacyl sodium is not contraindicated. This is due to the minimal systemic effect; absorption of the drug through the corneal epithelium is practically absent. However, many doctors do not recommend prescribing these two drugs in the 1st and 3rd trimester, as there is a possibility of toxic effects of the substance on the fetus.

When absorbed into the systemic circulation, there is a possibility of sulfacetamide passing into breast milk from the blood. But no studies have been conducted to accurately confirm this fact.

Side effects

Often the use of these two antibacterial drugs is accompanied by side effects - itching and redness, swelling of the eye and eyelid, and mild pain. These phenomena disappear on their own within 5-10 minutes after instillation. Manifestations of systemic allergies are also possible - angioedema, urticaria on the skin, anaphylactic reaction.

Contraindications

The use of Sulfacyl sodium and Albucid is strictly contraindicated if you are allergic to sulfacetamide. If an allergic complex of reactions occurs, you should stop using the drug. In this case, you need to consult with your doctor about replacing the drug with an analogue.

There is a risk of allergy to excipients in the preparations. Relatively contraindicated for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Overdose

Local symptoms of drug overdose are signs of irritation of the mucous membrane of the eye.

This includes burning and itching, swelling and redness of the eye, and watery eyes. Accidental ingestion of any of the drugs causes nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome.

In case of excessive accidental instillation of substances, you should rinse your eyes with plenty of warm water and consult a doctor. Oral use requires medical advice. If you have dyspepsia, you can rinse your stomach.

Release form

Sulfacyl sodium and Albucid are produced in plastic bottles packed in cardboard boxes. The volume of one bottle is 10 ml. The concentration of the active substance in them is 20% and 30%, depending on its quantity.

Storage

These specified medicinal substances can be purchased at a pharmacy without a doctor's prescription.

It is not recommended to use antibiotics without medical advice. The drugs should be stored in a dark, dry place; direct sunlight weakens the bactericidal effect of sodium sulfacetamide.

Storage conditions: moderate humidity and room temperature. Refrigerated conditions also reduce the effect on bacterial cells.

The shelf life of a factory-packed bottle is 2 years. Once opened, it can be stored for no more than 3 weeks.

Interaction

If you need to take other drugs in combination with Sulfacyl Sodium, you should consult your doctor.

The bacteriostatic effect of the drug is reduced when combined with Novocaine , Anestezin and Dicaine . And its toxicity increases when interacting with Diphenin , salicylates and para-aminosalicylic acid . When used together with indirect anticoagulants, their specific activity may increase.

Drops should not be used together with salts of some alkaloids, with agents containing silver salts, with zinc sulfate, as well as with acids and substances that have an acidic reaction.

Eye drops and ointments for allergic conjunctivitis

In case of allergic conjunctivitis, it is necessary, first of all, to eliminate or minimize contact with the allergen. To relieve symptoms, antihistamine H1-blockers are prescribed to suppress the allergic reaction:

  • drops Allergodil, Opatanol, Cromohexal, Lecrolin, Ketotifen, etc.;
  • decongestant and vasoconstrictor drops (Vizin, Visomitin, Oksial);
  • eye ointments, incl. hormonal (Hydrocortisone, Dexamethasone);

Tablets of systemic antihistamines (for example, Tavegil, Suprastin, Loratadine and their analogues) may also be prescribed.
