Acetylsalicylic acid suppresses the ability of platelets to aggregate (stick together) by blocking the synthesis of the aggregation mediator, thromboxane A2. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes free hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which neutralizes the irritating effect of the drug. Citric acid, which is the third component of Alka-Seltzer and is also declared as an active substance, ensures faster absorption of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore its speed of action. The latter, combined with the high effectiveness of alka-Seltzer, is its main advantage over conventional analgesics. And the positioning of the drug as a “hangover cure”, already mentioned at the beginning of the article, is just a clever marketing ploy, which for a long time (at least in our country) ensured it a special position among drugs with similar compositions.
