Afrin Moisturizing nasal spray 0.05% 15ml

Afrin

Afrin (oxymetazoline) is a local vasoconstrictor-decongestant of the alpha-adrenergic agonist group. Available in the form of a nasal spray. Used to relieve symptoms of allergic and infectious-inflammatory rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, salpingootitis, hay fever. Causes persistent vasoconstriction of the blood vessels of the olfactory and respiratory zones of the nasal cavity, sinuses, and auditory tube, which leads to a decrease in swelling, elimination of obstruction of the nasal passages and easier breathing through the nose. The auxiliary components included in Afrin (powdered modification of natural cellulose, cellulose gum, plasdon K29-32) make the spray more viscous and ensure its retention on the nasal mucosa, which prevents the spray from flowing out of the nasal passages and flowing into the throat (this is the advantage drug over standard aqueous solutions). Afrin's action develops within 1-2 minutes. The duration of action is on average 12 hours. When administered intranasally, the active component of the drug does not penetrate the systemic circulation. Before injecting into the nasal cavity, the spray bottle must be shaken vigorously. When using the drug for the first time, it is necessary to make several “idle” injections. Single dose – 2-4 injections into each nostril. Frequency of application – 1-3 times a day. In pediatric practice it is used from the age of 6. Possible side effects are predominantly local in nature: dehydration and burning of the nasal mucosa, hyposalivation, dry throat, sneezing.

With prolonged use, tachyphylaxis may occur - a rapid progressive decrease in the therapeutic effect. One of the auxiliary components of the drug, benzalkonium chloride, can in some cases irritate the nasal mucosa. Afrin is contraindicated in case of atrophy of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and the nerve endings located in it, or individual intolerance to the components of the drug. Afrin is incompatible with MAO inhibitors. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the drug is used with extreme caution. With a long course of medication (more than 7 days), the symptoms of rhinitis may recur. Use of the drug for 5 or more days should be agreed with your doctor. When using Afrin in accordance with the instructions for use, the drug does not affect the ability to operate potentially dangerous mechanisms, including driving a car, however, if undesirable side effects such as vertigo occur, it is necessary to refrain from such activities. Afrin slows down the absorption of local anesthetics and increases their duration of action. The combined use of the drug with other local vasoconstrictors is not recommended due to the increased risk of side effects, incl. systemic.

Active substance

Oxymetazoline

Compound

Active substance: oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.5 mg.

pharmachologic effect

Pharmacodynamics. Alpha-adrenergic stimulating agent for topical use. Has a vasoconstrictor effect. Oxymetazoline causes vasoconstriction of the mucous membranes of the nose, paranasal sinuses and eustachian tube, which leads to a decrease in their swelling and the release of nasal breathing during allergic and/or infectious-inflammatory rhinitis (runny nose). Due to the presence of excipients in the composition of the drug (microcrystalline cellulose and carmellose sodium and povidone-K29-32). The drug does not flow out of the nose or down the throat, since after administration into the nasal passages the spray becomes more viscous and is retained on the mucous membranes of the nose more effectively than a standard aqueous solution. This drug contains humectants (glycerol and macrogol-1450), promoting moisture retention, which helps provide hydration to dry or irritated nasal mucosa. According to clinical studies, the drug begins to act within 1 minute and the effect lasts up to 12 hours. Pharmacokinetics: When used as a nasal spray, oxymetazoline is practically not detected in the blood plasma.

Indications for use

Symptomatic treatment of rhinitis (runny nose) of allergic and/or infectious-inflammatory etiology, sinusitis, eustachitis, hay fever.

Mode of application

Intranasal. Before each use, you must shake the spray bottle vigorously. Before using the nasal spray for the first time, you must “calibrate” it by pressing the spray head several times. Adults and children over 6 years old - 2-3 injections into each nasal passage with an interval of 10 -12 hours. The frequency of use can be increased to 3 times a day in adults. It is not recommended to exceed the indicated dose.

Interaction

Slows down the absorption of local anesthetic drugs and prolongs their effect. Concomitant use with other vasoconstrictor drugs increases the risk of side effects. With the simultaneous use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (including a period of 14 days after their discontinuation) and tricyclic antidepressants - an increase in blood pressure.

Side effect

In general, the drug is well tolerated, and possible adverse events are usually mild and transient. Transient dryness and burning of the nasal mucosa, dry mouth and throat, sneezing; increased blood pressure, increased anxiety, nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, palpitations, sleep disturbances. With long-term use - tachyphylaxis, reactive hyperemia and atrophy of the nasal mucosa. Benzalkonium chloride, which is part of the drug, can cause local skin reactions.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic drugs, to any component of the drug, atrophic rhinitis, simultaneous use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (including a period of 14 days after their discontinuation), children under 6 years of age.

Overdose

In case of significant overdose or accidental ingestion, the following are possible: nausea, vomiting, cyanosis, fever, tachycardia, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, shortness of breath, mental disorders, depression of the central nervous system (drowsiness, decreased body temperature, bradycardia, decreased blood pressure, respiratory arrest and coma). Treatment: symptomatic; in case of accidental ingestion - gastric lavage, activated charcoal. Vasopressor drugs are contraindicated.

special instructions

With caution. Coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, chronic heart failure, severe atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension, hyperthyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, angle-closure glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia with clinical symptoms, pregnancy, lactation. With prolonged use (more than one week), symptoms of nasal congestion may return. If it is necessary to continue treatment for more than 5 days, consultation with a doctor is necessary. Avoid contact of the drug with the eyes. The drug, when used correctly and in recommended doses, does not affect driving or operating machinery, however, if side effects such as dizziness occur, you should refrain from these activities. Use during pregnancy and lactation. Safety of the drug in pregnant women and during lactation has not been established, therefore the drug should be prescribed to pregnant or breastfeeding women only if the expected benefit from using the drug for the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant.

AFRIN MOISTURIZING (spray)

- allergic rhinitis;
- sinusitis; - seasonal fever; - eustachitis. The price is about 280 rubles. Manufacture: Germany.

The spray comes in a bright purple package, inside there are instructions for use and a 15 ml bottle. The bottle is convenient for use, equipped with a nozzle for irrigation of the nasal passages:

The active ingredient is oxymetazoline 0.05%. Oxymetazoline has a vasoconstrictor and anti-edematous effect.

Afrin moisturizing is notable for the fact that it contains microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), due to this component, the spray has a thick consistency, which allows it to be fixed on the nasal mucosa, and therefore, it not only does not flow out of the nose, but also does not drain into the throat. Among other things, the Afrin spray labeled “moisturizing” also contains substances that help moisturize the nasal mucosa. For me, as a person with a very sensitive nose, this is very important. Conventional vasoconstrictor medications cause dryness and constriction in my nasal passages. But this does not happen with Afrin.

Afrin moisturizer really does an excellent job of moisturizing the nose and does not run down the throat or flow back out. In addition, it quickly relieves severe swelling of the nasopharynx and returns full breathing. Afrin's effects lasted me 10-12 hours. That is, I used it only 2 times a day. And this is very convenient! Regarding the duration of use, as far as I know, it is not recommended to use vasoconstrictor drugs for more than 5-7 days. Therefore, I did not abuse the effects of Afrin, I used it for 3-4 days, and then, when nasal breathing gradually improved, I switched to Aqua Maris (this is a spray based on sea water).

Afrin moisturizing is a very effective vasoconstrictor drug, with its own advantages and significant advantages over other similar drugs. Because it: - has a convenient sprayer; - has a thick consistency; - does not flow down the throat; - moisturizes the nasal mucosa; - quickly relieves swelling of the nasopharynx; — the spray lasts for 10-12 hours.

And the Afrin Moisturizing nasal spray has only one drawback - its price is much higher than that of its competitors. But he completely justifies her and this is the pure truth. And one more thing: the most important thing is not to abuse vasoconstrictor drugs, otherwise an ordinary nose can easily and quickly become dependent... on the drops.

Take care of yourself!
