75% of women of reproductive age experience at least one episode of thrush during their lifetime, and 40-45% experience two or multiple episodes1
Thrush is one of the most common reasons for seeking medical help, and according to statistics, every third woman has encountered this problem1. Thrush is an infectious lesion of the mucous membrane of the vagina and vulva, caused by yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida, and in 80-90% it is Candida albicans; other representatives of the genus Candida more often cause a recurrent form of thrush1.
Also, during thrush, the vaginal microflora is disrupted - the number of lactobacilli decreases sharply, which contributes to increased growth and reproduction of pathogenic fungi of the genus Candida.
Most pathogenic fungi, including fungi of the genus Candida, can be found on the skin of a healthy person, in the mouth, and in the intestines.
A normal concentration of lactobacilli provides the necessary acidity in the vagina, which suppresses the growth of fungi. Lactobacilli are also involved in the formation of local immunity
Normally, lactobacilli predominate in a woman’s vagina and are detected in 97.8% of cases2. The vaginal microflora is represented, among other things, by bifidobacteria and a few opportunistic microorganisms. Purpose of beneficial lactobacilli
– produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, which maintain the required pH level of the vagina, thereby preventing the development of unwanted processes that cause “harmful” microorganisms.

Indications
For oral administration: treatment and prevention of non-invasive intestinal candidiasis (including after taking antibiotics, cytostatics, corticosteroids).
For external and local use: infections of the skin and mucous membranes caused by Candida or other sensitive yeasts, yeast-like fungi or dermatophytes (including balanoposthitis, otomycosis).
For intravaginal use: vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Contraindications for use
Hypersensitivity to natamycin.
pharmachologic effect
Antifungal polyene antibiotic of the macrolide group, has a wide spectrum of antifungal action. Has a fungicidal effect. Natamycin binds sterols of cell membranes, disrupting their integrity and functions, which leads to the death of microorganisms. Sensitive to natamycin
most pathogenic yeasts, especially Candida albicans.
are less sensitive
to natamycin.
Resistance to natamycin has not been observed in clinical practice.
Dosage regimen
When taken orally, a single dose is 100 mg. The frequency of administration for adults is 4 times a day, for children - 2 times a day.
Externally and locally applied 1 time or several times a day.
Intravaginally - 1 time/day at night for 3-6 days.
The duration of the course of treatment is determined individually. After the symptoms of the disease disappear, it is recommended to continue treatment for several more days.
Side effect
From the digestive system:
Nausea and diarrhea are possible (occur in the first days when taken orally and go away on their own during treatment).
Local reactions:
mild irritation and burning sensation are possible.
special instructions
In case of chronic or recurrent infection, local treatment can be supplemented with systemic use.
During menstruation, natamycin is not used intravaginally.
When used intravaginally, there is no need to avoid sexual intercourse. However, it is recommended to examine sexual partners and, if candidiasis is detected, to conduct a course of treatment with natamycin. Also during the treatment period you should use barrier contraception.
Natamycin can be prescribed to newborns.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Restrictions during pregnancy - No restrictions. Restrictions when breastfeeding - No restrictions.
Can be used during pregnancy and lactation according to indications in recommended doses.
Use in children
Restrictions for children - No restrictions.
Natamycin can be prescribed to newborns.
Factors contributing to the occurrence of thrush:
Thrush is not a sexually transmitted infection
- weakened immune system
- disrupted vaginal microflora (for example, as a result of antibiotic therapy)
- concomitant urogenital infections and gynecological diseases
- endocrine diseases (diabetes mellitus, obesity, thyroid pathology, etc.)
- pregnancy (high levels of estrogen have a beneficial effect on the growth of Candida fungi, and the mechanism of immunosuppression in pregnant women also plays an additional role)
- long-term use of antibiotics, glucocorticosteroids, immunosuppressants
- use of high estrogen contraceptives
- external factors (failure to comply with personal hygiene rules, tight underwear made of synthetic fabrics)
Treatment of thrush
There are two groups of drugs in the treatment of thrush:
- topical preparations (suppositories, ointments and creams)
- systemic drugs (tablets, capsules)
Drugs for local treatment are most preferable, because do not have a systemic effect, have fewer side effects, and are most effective because act directly at the site of the disease. Also, when treating thrush, they often encounter a number of difficulties and problems. The main problems in the treatment of thrush are:
- development of resistance of fungi of the genus Candida
- restoration of normal vaginal microflora
- frequent relapses (including due to insufficient concentration of lactobacilli)
It is important to follow the specialist’s recommendations, observing the prescribed dosages and application regimen.
Since the prevalence of the disease has increased in recent years, it is important to receive complete therapy and avoid relapses of thrush. When treating thrush, experts recommend an integrated approach to therapy. Complex treatment should be aimed at solving two problems: eliminating the cause of thrush (fungi of the genus Candida) and restoring the vaginal microflora.
Ecofucin® in the treatment of thrush
Natamycin
- has a fungicidal
effect - causes
the death
of fungal cells - resistance to it does not develop
- does not inhibit
the growth of natural microflora - practically not absorbed
into the blood and has no systemic effect

Prebiotic3
- actively fermented by normal vaginal microflora, stimulating the growth
of lactobacilli4 - causes restoration of vaginal microflora, stimulates local immunity

The active ingredient5 of Ecofucin® eliminates the cause of thrush, and the prebiotic3 in Ecofucin® helps restore vaginal microflora and strengthen local immunity4
The effectiveness and safety of the drug Ecofucin has been proven by clinical studies
Ecofucin®
, which contains natamycin and lactulose, promotes faster clinical and microbiological recovery in patients with thrush (including pregnant women and women during breastfeeding) than a drug that contains only natamycin.

Clinical cure occurred significantly earlier in the group of patients who used the drug Ecofucin.
