Belogent during pregnancy

According to the information from the instructions for the drug, Belogent cream cannot be used during pregnancy. Experts do not have data regarding the safety of using a combination of a hormonal component and an antibiotic during gestation. In addition, gentamicin is able to penetrate the placental barrier and reach the tissues of the embryo, which can negatively affect the process of its development. Studies conducted on animals have proven the presence of reproductive toxicity of this component, so doctors do not use it during pregnancy.

Separately, it is necessary to say about the lactation period. Scientists have not been able to establish the possibility of penetration of corticosteroids in the case of topical application (cream, ointment) into breast milk. When deciding to stop breastfeeding, doctors take into account the importance of therapy for the expectant mother, comparing it with the possible risks for the fetus.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Betamethasone has antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and antipruritic effects. When in contact with the skin betamethasone has a pronounced and rapid effect in the area of inflammation, reducing the strength of both objective symptoms (edema, erythema, lichenification) and subjective sensations (irritation, itching , pain).

Gentamicin has a bactericidal effect against the vast majority of microorganisms, including strains of Streptococcus spp., Proteus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and others.

Belogent cream - hormonal or not?

Patients using the cream for the first time often address similar questions to the doctor. In order to get an answer to this, you need to refer to the instructions, which indicate the composition of Belogent cream (cream and Belogent). Among the active ingredients there is betamethasone, a glucocorticoid. Taking this into account, we can say that Belogent cream is hormonal.

This substance itself has anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictor, and antiallergic effects. As a result of inhibition of the process of release of cytokines and inflammatory mediators, the inflammatory process attenuates. Externally, this is manifested by a decrease in swelling of the skin and a decrease in hyperemia.

What is better – Belogent ointment or cream?

Patients who are prescribed medication often wonder whether Belogent cream or ointment is better to use. If you pay attention to the composition of the two pharmacological forms, the concentration of active substances in them is the same. The differences lie in the basis of the drug: the ointment is made on the basis of fats, which makes it thicker and more viscous. The active substance from such a medicine is absorbed slowly, but it acts longer and penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin.

Belogent cream has a less thick substance. It is more easily absorbed, but penetrates into the surface layers of the skin. Creamy forms of medications are used when it is necessary to apply them to skin that constantly gets wet. Taking into account the indicated properties of Belogent cream and ointment, doctors individually determine what is best for the patient in a particular case.
